Haiti
The effects of the disastrous earthquake in Haiti on January 12 will be long term. Our hearts go out to the people of Haiti and their extended families around the world.
To help Haiti recover will require significant financial resources. As Paul Farmer, M.D., one of the founders of Partners in Health and the chairman of Harvard Medical School's Department of Global Health and Social Medicine, states, "in-kind donations are not really what is needed now." Or, in the words of Haitian President René Préval, "Long term assistance is much better." (Port-au-Prince, January 15, 2010)
The IRS has extended the deadline for making 2009 tax deductible contributions toward relief in Haiti until February 28.
